Wild Thing, You Make Everything Groovy

The classic children's book Where The Wild Things Are makes a terrific lesson that is literacy based for the Halloween season.

My kids and I are working on their understanding of how to draw using some of the Elements of Art; shape, line, color, pattern and texture
We talk about it all the time. We also looked at and discussed this power point which outlines some connections between Sendak's Wild Things and some mythological wild things from history.

We assemble our wild things with brass fasteners-fascinating objects to the 2nd grade mind.

It's kind of scary!

But awesome.

There's a terrific vintage moving picture book made famous by the wonderful Weston Woods Studio. Sendak even had a hand in it's production. You can find it here via New Hampshire Public Television.
