Bob Ross: Practicing Kindness While Painting!

A big thank-you to Artist Jacqueline Yanez for the beautiful design of Bob Ross above! 👆

Hi Roxbury Artists & Families,

Here's another Inspiring Artist to share with you!

I've been watching Bob Ross painting on Youtube! While Bob paints, he likes to talk to his audience. He likes to explain how to paint, and he uses really interesting art tools to paint. Look for them while you watch!

Some people liked to paint along with Bob Ross, and some people just enjoy watching and listening to Bob while he paints landscapes.

Landscapes are paintings of the outdoors in nature.
Things you can find in landscapes are:

  • Trees
  • Plants
  • Flowers
  • Water
  • Buildings, like barns or houses
  • Birds and animals
What other things does Bob Ross add to his paintings?

I think Bob Ross is a very kind person, and this comes through as I watch him paint. I especially love his pet squirrel Peapod! He treats Peapod and all creatures with kindness and caring.

Here's what you can do:

Watch a Bob Ross video with your family. While you are watching, think:
  • How is Bob Ross showing kindness?
  • What words does he use?
  • How does he act?
After you watch Bob Ross videos with your family, draw me a landscape, adding anything you can think of that is outside in nature

Then write a few sentences about how you felt when you watched Bob Ross painting. Talk with your family about it, too.
How can you show kindness, every day?

Please send me your artwork on ClassDojo or email it to me at kweinstein@stamfordct.gov
Don't forget to put your name on your artwork! 😉

Faith Ringgold Friday!

                            Hello Roxbury Artists!

I hope your week of distance learning was fun and interesting...sometimes new things can be challenging-but I know that together, we can all make it work!

I told you I would do a post about Faith Ringgold and here it is! I love Faith Ringgold's art and story-telling because she is someone who cares about others and uses her talents and creativity to tell stories that are meaningful and inspirational, from her own point of view.

Here's something she said about the importance of being your unique self and sharing yourself with the world:

"You can't sit around and wait for somebody to say who you are. You need to write it and paint it and do it."

She knows that art and artists have the power to change the world!
Watch this short video about Faith Ringgold's life and work:

Here is Faith Ringgold reading her book titled, Tar Beach
After listening to the story, answer the questions below:

1. Do you think Cassie in the story could really fly? Or was it just in her imagination?
2. If you could fly, where would you go? Why would you choose to go to that place or time? Would you bring anyone with you? Who would you bring?
3. Do a drawing of you flying and where you would go.
4. Write a story to go with your drawing, if you'd like, and share it with me on Class Dojo or send it to me at school!

See you on Monday, Artists! Be unique! Be you! Be creative! Tell your own story!

Spotlight On The Artist: Ashley Bryan

                            Hi Roxbury Artists!

Let's talk about artists who write books. We call artists who write books, Author - Illustrators.Since we know that books can really inspire our imagination, we read lots of books in The Art Studio and at home.

Ashley Bryan is an author who we know from the book Beautiful Blackbird. Here is a video of him telling the story in a way that's called "call and response". You can join in the story with the other kids in the video. Click here!

Here is a video of Ashley Bryan talking about the importance of books in his life:

Reading Rockets YouTube channel has a whole section called "Meet the Author" !

Questions for You:
  • Who is your favorite author, or author/illustrator?
  • If you had a chance to meet, have a snack and hang out with your favorite author, what would you ask them?
  • What do you want to know about them?
For example, one of my favorite author/illustrators is
Faith Ringgold. I would love to know how she gets ideas for her stories! Does she think about her own life to get her inspiration? What made her start doing story quilts?
Hmmm. I think my next post will be all about
Faith Ringgold.
Stay tuned!

You Silly Monkey!

Hello Roxbury Artists!

Monkeys! You need to know all about monkeys if you want to draw them, so let's learn some facts about monkeys and see them in action!

The monkeys you see in the painting above the video were painted by Chinese artist, Wang Yani, when she was 4 years old. Her father was an artist, so her interest in art started when she was very young. When her father brought a monkey home for her as a pet, she became so interested in them--she started drawing and painting them all the time. You can read more about Wang Yani right here.
You can watch a short video, that shows Yani, painting her monkeys.

When you are ready to draw, remember you'll be using shapes and lines, because you know that you can draw almost anything using The Elements of Art, right?
Here's another way to draw a monkey, because you remember, there are many styles and ways to draw everything! That's what art is all about!

Finally here's a monkey using simple lines and shapes...she looks like she's dancing!

So, now you are able to draw a monkey, you can say "monkey" in sign language!

Oh, Artists? Remember to have an adult send pictures of your art and messages to me through Class Dojo or Google Classroom! I want to see your creative work!

Extra monkey-business for after your lesson:
5 Little Monkeys Song on Sesame Street
Learn the 5 Little Monkeys Song in Sign Language
A Read-Aloud of the Book, Caps For Sale, all about monkeys getting into some serious mischief!

Bird Talk

                            Hello Roxbury Artists!

Look outside! What do you see? I see birds! Birds in the trees, birds in the sky!
Can you hear the birds? What do you hear?
Birds have many songs and that's the way they talk to each other!
Before we start our bird drawing, let's play a game called
Bird Song Hero!

Now that you are a bird song hero, watch this video about a bird without a song called Whistleless.
(Wait! Before you watch...what do you think the video is about, just by knowing the title?) Ok? Watch!

Think About this:
How was the bird in the video unique or special?
What shapes do you see that were used to create the bird? The people? The city?

Let's review The Elements of Art, because we will be using shapes and lines to create our bird.

There are many ways to draw a bird so remember, you can add your own ideas and style to make your bird unique.

After you draw your bird, write a story in only pictures (without words) about your bird and give your bird unique or special qualities or powers. Put yourself in the story! What adventures do you have with your bird?
Don't forget to share your art with Ms. W. by having an adult post to Dojo or Google Classroom!

Monday

Rascally Rabbit

Hi Roxbury Artists,

It has come to my attention that YOU need to draw a bunny! Because, of course you must know how to draw a bunny.

Or maybe a rabbit? Or is it called a hare? What's the difference?

Here is the link for a video that a really great art teacher, Patty, at Deep Space Sparkle is sharing with us!

Albrecht Dürer a German artist and printmaker created this super detailed, rather famous painting called Young Hare using water color.

This video tells you some more about the life and art of Albrecht Dürer.

When you finish your bunny drawing--please let us know by having an adult upload it to Dojo or Google classroom.
Or better yet- leave me a comment!
